Farmakas: a story of many centuries
Farmakas village, located in the heart of Cyprus, is surrounded by the majestic Troodos mountain range. At a distance of 40 kms southwest from the capital Lefkosia, at its southern edge, Farmaka is uniquely located at the boundary of 3 district borders (Lefkosia, Lemessos and Larnaka).

Farmakas is a beautiful, traditional Cypriot mountain village, with unique landscape and spectacular scenery.

At 950 m above sea level, it is the tenth highest village in Cyprus.

According to the Cyprus Encyclopedia, Farmakas must have existed since the time of Byzantium. If the village was founded during the Frankish period (1192-1489 m. X.) or the Venetian rule (1489-1571 m. X.), it would have a foreign name.

One explanation for it’s name is believed to have been derived from the profession of early settlers in the area who used to make various remedies using herbs from the area (farmaka is the Greek word for medicine).

A second explanation regarding the name of the village is that it originated from ‘ farmatziin ‘ (poison), the bitter cold during the winter months.

The area enjoys rich agricultural diversity, deriving from its fertile grounds and ideal all year round climatic conditions. From sunny blue skies and refreshing cooler breezes during summer, colourful spring time and leafy autumns, to snowy, cosy winters, every season is an ideal time to visit.

Farmakas is a destination for foodies, wine and nature lovers
