Our Tradition

Farmakas Easter
Unique Easter Traditions
Among the customs, which still survive in Farmakas, is an Easter custom that is not found anywhere else in Cyprus. It ‘s called “Poullaki” (Πουλλάκι), and it consists of a set text reminiscent of a medieval poem.
In this case, the text has religious content. It is recited in groups by the inhabitants of the village in the courtyard of the church on Easter Sunday or Monday. During the recitation movements are made that remind one of an ancient tragedy dance. Another unique Easter custom of Farmakas is the so-called “Vassilis”. It is an improvised dialogue of various persons, with many theatrical elements.

Farmakas Dance
Annual Tomato Dance
Traditionally held in August over the last 30 plus years (with the exception of the Covid period), this event, held in the village square, celebrates with music, song, dance and food, the produce for which the name of Farmakas is synonymous.
The soil, altitude and quality of the village water, have gained the reputation for Farmaka as the producer of the best tomatoes in Cyprus.

Food Festival
“Kopiaste” at Farmakas
Held in October, the festival showcases the richness of the agricultural produce in Farmakas and traditional locally made food products.
There are displays of the various produce as well as cooking demonstrations and generous samplings of popular foods such as sioutzouko, palouze, quince paste, halloumi and trachana.
The taste experience also includes on site distilling and sampling of zivania, as well as traditional dishes prepared using our Cyprus renowned tomatoes.

Wine
Farmakas Wine Region
The Farmakas wine region is one of the oldest regions in Cyprus to plant vines. Vineyards can be found at an elevation of 1350 meters, with 150-year-old grapes planted deep into the slopes of the surrounding mountains.
The altitude, as well as the mineral rich soil, allow the grapes to develop a distinct character and complexity.
