Santa Irene winery was founded in 2015 and is the fulfillment of a personal dream of its creator, Mr. Daniel Anastasis. Its primary goal is to highlight the viticultural and wine tradition of Farmakas in particular, the mountainous Pitsilia in general and of course the whole of Cyprus. The winery is strictly oriented towards the production of authentic, quality, and idiosyncratic wines, with a clear Cypriot character. In the 200 hectares of the traditional centenarian vineyards, the local variety Mavro dominates, while at the same time the Xinisteri variety is scattered around.
The unalterable goal of the Santa Irene winery is the revival of the neglected and undervalued Cypriot traditional variety of Mavro grape and at the same time the regeneration and preservation of the traditional vineyards of the Farmakas region, which are clearly part of the cultural heritage of our island.
The vineyards are located from 1000 to 1350 meters. They are planted along steep slopes in the mountains that surround the village. The absence of dry-stone walls is characteristic, which demonstrates the uniqueness of the morphology of these vineyards, but at the same time makes the cultivation care particularly demanding. This morphology is a prohibitive factor for any mechanical – technological contribution to cultivation, which is cared for purely manually.
